Fargo wedding photography – a look back at 2011

Alyssa + Keith | The Avalon Fargo | Wedding Photography

11.11.11 – the most popular date of the year. I was quite nervous that the weather would be bad. You can never tell in November – we could have blizzards or sunshine, fog, rain or wind.  But we were blessed with a perfect day! Warm enough that the Bride didn’t even need her coat. Now that I can take with a smile!  We started out at The Avalon in Fargo where the Bride was given a space to get ready. Much nicer than a church basement nursery with crayon drawings all over the walls and plastic toys to trip over. : )  The Bride earned extra points with me, lol!

I adore this dress!! Ack, the flower detail, and POCKETS. It has pockets!

We decided to do the first look behind the Avalon in the alley since it was such a pretty day.  I love the whole sequence of photos so bear with me, they are too full of joy to pick one!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the shot below that my assistant got. The Bride’s sister (the gorgeous blond) has such a perfectly sweet expression. Life and photography is all about those moments. Those emotions.

Portrait time!! My favorite part of the day, working with Alyssa and Keith! Gosh you two are fabulous!

Can you find me in the photo below? My assistant snapped this photo and I laughed at how I look like “Where’s Waldo”  in the corner. – side note Anyone remember Where’s Waldo? I used to love those books when I was a kid!

Now for my very FAVORITE  images from the day. We were walking in this alley and I found this little spotlight of gorgeousness. A window on the opposite building was reflecting the sunlight just like a spotlight right on the couple. Seriously just thinking about it makes my heart beat a little faster. How can light be so delicious! All that to say these are pretty much strait out of camera , 100% natural light. No flash!

The perfect storm of beautiful people, stunning dress, and lovely light. sigh.

We found ourselves at the lovely orange wall. You’d think I knew ahead of time that she would have orange accents in her bouquet. Nope, just one of those perfect situations where everything comes together to make me look good (and the couple) lol!

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, I LOVE using architecture in my photography. I think if I didn’t love working with people I’d definitely be tempted to do architectural photography. I love the lines, the textures, the structures that lead the eyes where you want them to go. It’s awesome! But of course the BEST is using it to bring the eyes to people who are the most interesting thing on this earth!

I know it’s kind of cheesy but I love asking the couple kiss in front of their wedding party. Why? Just look at their faces… the couple is smiling – WHILE kissing – the wedding party is laughing along, and I think that’s the best thing ever. Joy.

Remember I said POCKETS – yeah kind of obsessed with them.

You’d never know the photos above were taken in the doorway of the church with only about 24 inches of space and a wheelchair in the way! And YES I have no problems getting down and dirty if it means getting the shot I need. No wonder I’m sore from head to toe the day after a wedding, lol!

The one sad thing about November weddings is the sun sets so early! It wasn’t even 5:00 yet and we were already getting sunset images outside the church.

Getting ready to walk down the aisle. Last minute nerves maybe? More likely playing up to the camera. : )

Because it was pitch black outside and the party bus really didn’t have any lights I headed straight back to the Avalon and focused on reception details instead. A much better use of my time!

I enjoy challenging myself with detail shots to make everything look magical. It’s super fun to use my extra flashes and ad dimension to images. I also really enjoy getting bokeh in my images (that’s technical lingo for the way lights in the distance become these round glowing spots of light.)

The Avalon catered a delicious meal which I was SO thankful to be invited to. I was extremely hungry by this time – I was afraid my rumbling tummy was making it a little obvious.  Thank you Alyssa & Keith for inviting us to eat with you!!

The whole day was lovely from start to finish. Smooth, no major hiccups or problems. Now that’s a perfect wedding day!

Thank you Alyssa & Keith for laughing with me, listening to my directions, and being yourselves with me!

Trollwood Bluestem Center for the Arts Wedding | Jackie + Randy | Fargo Wedding Photography

WARNING  a long post ahead! Ready? Here we go!

Jackie asked me to come to the hair salon (Cloud 9) at about 9 am, as she should be done with hair by about 9:30.

Well it took a little longer than that but we had fun chatting as she got her natural curls curled tighter and pinned.

Then off to the make up chair…

I was super excited to be shooting at a new venue: the Trollwood Bluestem Center for the Arts! It’s gorgeous!! I loved this wall of stone. Lovely light and neat texture. Oh yes!
The brother of the bride saw me hanging the shoes on the wall, later I overheard him telling the bride ,”Did you see what the photographer did with your shoes??!!”
Yes, I have weird ideas. But I love the way the photos turned out!

I don’t think I’ve ever been in such a YELLOW room as the one the bride got dressed in. The walls were yellow pine, the ceiling was yellow pine, the yellow lights were bouncing off of the yellow ceiling. It was crazy! I’ll do a before and after photo later to show you how much I had to push the color in post processing to get the skin tones back. I even had my camera setting as far in the blue range as it would go – but it wasn’t enough. I’m actually surprised I could get them back, I thought I’d have to turn them all black and white. : )
I LOVE the photos of mom seeing Jackie for the first time. She was laughing and crying at the same time. Happy tears are so special.
And first look photos. Another favorite time for excited, emotional images!

See what I mean, the light was gorgeous! I just love how amazing Jackie and Randy are together. Her eyes just sparkle when she’s with him (and don’t you love his dreamy brown eyes next to her stunning blue eyes!).

Then outside to snap a few in the prairie grass. I was so thankful that it wasn’t raining, the gray skies and cold wind were not that pleasant but at least it was dry so Jackie could sit down! She’s so much fun!
Stunning! Randy you are a lucky guy.
I love the playfulness between them. People who don’t take themselves too seriously are my kind of people! ; )
Bring on the wedding party (at Concordia College)!
Tough Guys:
Hot girls:
As you could tell by the shoes and socks the colors were green and orange. So what could you do for centerpieces? Goldfish of course!! What else?!
Jackie told us a hilarious story of going to the pet store to get 24 individually packaged goldfish. You can just imagine the look she got from the poor guy. “What? Ummm we can’t do that … I think.”
But of course she got them in the end:
The fish were a hit with all the kids!
And then the ceremony time was upon us:

Woohoo! Man and wife! Time to toast in the party bus:

I loved the way the Bluestem Event Center lit up as the evening progressed. Such a pretty place for a wedding!!

Amazing food by the Ovendoor. Thank you Jackie and Randy for inviting me to eat too! By this time I was so hungry and thankful for the invitation. : )
With the sunset out came the party fun. Nerd glasses? Yes please!
Let the dancing begin!
I absolutely love the next two dance images. Probably my favorite dance photos of the night. The light is so deliciously romantic.
The dance floor was full!
It was a lovely wedding day! Maybe a little bit windy but that only gave us some fabulous veil shots. Thank you Jackie & Randy for being not only amazing clients but so open with me! I have absolutely LOVED working with both of you. Jackie your smile and laughter is a joy to be around, and Randy your quiet calm is so comfortable. You are perfect together!!

Angie + Brady | Fargo Wedding Photography | The Avalon

What a beautiful day for a Wedding in Fargo (this was right before the heat wave that came through the area!). Blue skies, perfect weather, and more important a couple who were relaxed and ready for a fun filled day!

I love finding light and shadows to ad interest into images. The stripes on the wall were really fun!

Angie’s Dress was AMAZING! I loved all the ruffles and detailing.

We decided to head over to the Train Depot for a little shade. I just love it there!

And a few ‘secret’ locations around downtown Fargo with the Wedding Party – Just for fun!

After the ceremony we headed to the Avalon Events Center for an evening full of laughter ( a little embarrassment for the groom) and dancing.

Thanks Angie and Brady for an incredibly fun day!

Symmetry | Club Assignment

I had a little too much fun with this week’s photography club assignement: Symmetry

I just snapped this one of my sis for fun…

Then I found my favorite subject:

The last image is the one I ended up submitting to the club. I just really liked the feel of this one. I didn’t do any Photoshop besides increasing the contrast, but the sun shining off the pipes gave this really neat glow.

I’ll be posting a long blog with Angie + Brady’s wedding photos soon so get ready for some fun wedding photos!!

Radiopoppers

I’m loving my new radiopoppers. For those of you not photographers out there these little gadgets let me set up off camera flashes around a dance floor or cake or whatever so I can get light from different directions. So fun!

The real reason I wanted to get these was for wedding dances. Most dance halls have NO windows, and even if they do it’s after dark before the dance starts. So I’m often working in a space that has less light than the average Christmas twinkle lights give. And I hate setting my camera’s ISO so high that images get grainy. No more! I’ve shot two dances since I got these babies, and wow, they are amazing!

Just to give you an idea here are 4 images I took setting up the lights:

For the cake shot I had my assistant hid behind the cake holding one flash pointed towards me for a nice rim light. And I set up a second flash off to the left for side dimension light. Then my on-camera flash filled in the front. Easy. Beautiful!

For the dance I try to set up a triangle. One flash set up on the two far corners, and then my on-camear flash. This lets me get beautiful rim light from one corner, the other corner becomes a side light and my camera flash fills out the front details.

As the couple moves around I can also get some pretty cool flairs.

So glad I invested in these new flashes and radiopoppers. Although getting them set up the first time was really tricky. My vlog this week explains some of the crazy things I’ve learned. Be warned though … my brain blanks on me towards the end – but I decided I didn’t care if I looked stupid. I’m just me. ; )

Alyssa + Keith | Fargo / Moorhead Engagement

Wow, Alyssa and Keith were troopers! It  hit 100 degrees in Fargo while we were out doing our engagement photo shoot! Talk about a HOT couple (and they really are stunning people!).

Alyssa – you are such a MODEL!   Keith – you are a lucky guy and don’t forget it.

Love, love LOVE these next few!

Wowzers. Do I get lucky with how great my clients are or what!  Not a complaint about the heat or mosquitoes. I can’t wait for November to come and I get to freeze with you at your wedding. That’s what I call full circle. ; )

Carl & Amanda

Dress by Allen Evens - the Rand Collection

The jewelry was stunning!

Dad seeing his daughter for the first time. A very emotional moment. Even I was choking up! But happy tears are good things!

Then we headed over to a friend’s farm to do outdoor photos. This is where the fun begins!

Loved the colors in the garden! (sorry for making you sit on hard rocks, but the photos look amazing!)

Amanda’s flowers were done by The Red Poppy out of Fosston MN. They were stunning! Gorgeous orchids, lillies, and roses. Amanda was telling me that because of the Tsunami she had no idea what color orchids would show up! Not that’s a leap of faith for a wedding day. : )

Love the next shot that my assistant got from the other side of the flower garden:

Enter the Wedding Party:

Umbrella fun!

I just had to grab a photo of the extra attendant that showed up:

Oh YEAH!!!! Wooop it up!

Back to the church for the ceremony. It’s such a cute little church in Fosston.

It’s official – they’re married!!

Love this moment with dad after the ceremony:

I think the reception is probably the most lavish, gorgeous one I’ve photographed to date! Everywhere I turned there were lovely things to photograph! I’m so glad I have my new flashes because there was not one window in the whole room. I’m going to do a post later this week about my new flashes and do a few photos with and without so you can see the difference. For now enjoy the goodness!

Cake by : Cakes by Heather – Mahnomen MN (Ican’t find a website but if I get one from the bride I’ll ad it!)

It’s always cool to see how people use their engagement photos. Wine Labels by Myownlabels.com

Band: The Front Fenders

Whew. It was 18 hours by the time I got home from Mahnomen. A long fun day!!

Congratulations Carl & Amanda! Thank you so much for inviting me into your special day!

New Favorite

My sister brought these back from a recent trip to Minneapolis. And they are beyond delicious! It sounds really weird to have salt mixed with dark chocolate, but the combination of rich creamy chocolate with a small grain of sea salt brings out a sweetness to the chocolate. So strange that salt makes it seem sweeter and richer! Anyway if you live near a Trader Joe’s or can get to one try these out!!

 MMMMM!

10 minutes from home

Weekly club assignment: Walk, bike or drive exactly 10 minutes from home and take a photo. Not to technical and sounds easy right? Well yes, except that I decided to go biking with my dog and it was a hot day so she was running slower than normal, and at exactly 10 minutes we were in an empty parking lot! Not much of interest there. But I found a little humor instead:

I’m so glad it is summer and I don’t have to worry about snow!!!

Randa + Tyler | Fargo Wedding Photography | Teaser!

Randa and Tyler had quite the interesting day. First the Church scheduled a funeral for the exact time they were going to get ready – so we had to move the getting ready area to the school section of the church. Then the dress shop forgot to send the slip with the dress so we had to wait an extra 45 minutes for someone to go pick it up. And then our first look got backwards, the bride arrived at the spot first! Oh well, we had a beautiful day and made up for lost time easily! They were both so relaxed and fun that no one seemed to mind the day throwing us hurdles. : ) I LOVE how great my clients are about things like this!!  That’s the thing about weddings, there’s always something that is different than originally planned!

The next image is special because Randa’s father passed away and she wore his wedding ring on her thumb. I love catching those very special details!

I LOVE this shot I snatched when the girls were bustling up her dress!

More later!! I’m editing like crazy because I have another wedding this weekend. Yikes!

Radiopoppers + Plan B at a wedding + Cycle of life + Randomness | Fargo Wedding Photographer

I just bought something that’s been on my wish-list since I first saw them used by Bob Davis in 2008 when I went to a  workshop in Minneapolis: RADIOPOPPERS!They are little devices that you attached to flashes. One sits on the flash on your camera, so when you click the shutter it sends a radio signal to all the flashes to fire. These are going to take my photos to the next level! Especially receptions and dances where I can set up three flashes at different angles, so no matter what direction people move they will be in great light. And the cool thing is that I can control the light output for each individual flash, so I can make one brighter than the next. Cool huh!

I did have a little trouble getting the poppers to work on my SB700 flashes – but I’ll do a vlog on that next week so I can show you what to do if you have the same issues. It’s just easier than typing it all out!

So this is the first test session I had with my sister modeling for me. We were in the basement with all the lights off to simulate a dark dance hall. I’m really pleased!!

Today I’m getting ready for a wedding tomorrow. Cleaning lenses, clearing memory cards, charging batteries, packing equipment. The glamorous life!

(you can see the radio poppers attached to the flashes with a white band)

The wedding tomorrow had an interesting twist two days ago… the church scheduled a funeral just a few hours before the wedding, including a meal in the basement where we were supposed to be getting ready! So we had to go to plan B – getting ready in the school building behind the church. I’m so thankful that my brides are totally amazing people who don’t get fazed by things like this! She’s been so amazing and not a stressed moment through the whole thing. Love that!!

The funny thing is after the wedding there will be a baptism in the church, so it’s like the cycle of life in reverse: Funeral, Wedding, Baptism.

And just because my dog is too cute I’ll leave you with a photo I took of her the same day I did shadow photos. This was one of the window/openings that was creating the neat pattern.

Well this was one random blog post, but fun to do something different. Tomorrow I’ll post a teaser from the wedding!

High Shutter Speed | Assignment week 8

This week we had to set our shutter speed up to 1500ths of a second or faster to try to capture something in motion. I wasn’t really sure what to take photos of since I’m not going to a sporting event, and last week I did a dance photo so I didn’t want to do that again. Then today it started to rain really hard. I noticed the drops hitting the birdbath were making little splashes. So I grabbed my camera – and an umbrella – and tried to catch one in action. It was really tough because I had to set my camera f stop on 2.8 to get enough light for a fast shutter, which means that the raindrop had to land in about a space of less than 1 inch to be infocus. I got lucky on my third shot:

Jackie + Randy teaser | Fargo Engagement shoot!

On monday I got to photograph Jackie and Randy for the second time. We did a really quick 5 minute shoot earlier this winter so they could get a photo for their save the dates, but we wanted to do the ‘real’ session when the weather got nice. It was actually kind of funy because their first shoot was durring our cold snap – so it was REALLY cold, and monday we got our first heat wave of the summer – 90 degrees! I hope that means their september wedding will be perfect. : )

Seriously loving this spot we found:

I can’t wait to post the rest, there are SO many great photos to pick from!

Lindsay + Patrick | Anniversary shoot @ the Hotel Donaldson – Downtown Fargo

I’ve known Lindsay for about a year. We met online every day at the Showit Live show, chatting in the group of photographers. I remember one day David Jay asked where everyone watching the show was from … and Lindsay and I both typed “Fargo” – and then proceeded to laugh and screech (if you can do that online) “REALLY!” After a few months of online chatting we decided to grab a cup of coffee at caribou. Our 1/2 hour visit turned into about 2.5 hours and her husband texting if she was coming home for supper or if he should eat alone. lol!  Since then we’ve enjoyed several more coffee outings and a photo shoot together.

Patrick contacted me two weeks ago saying it was their anniversary and would I be available to surprise Lindsay with a photo shoot of the two of them. At the Hotel Donaldson no less (probably the most well known hotel downtown Fargo). Of course I said yes!

Lindsay requested a few serious photos – we decided on a James Bond style, just for fun. ; )

Then out to a tiny patio/balcony. The light was harsh behind, and dark inside, but it was cool too!

Thanks Patrick for asking me to join in the fun! Happy Anniversary – may there be a lifetime full of many more!

A day off | Fargo wedding photographer

Whew. I really need a mini vacation! I feel like I’ve been running in circles for over a year. Even our fam ily vacation last fall turned into stressville with the vandalism to our house! So yesterday I decided to just take a day off. Thankfully I’m caught up on all my wedding photography editing, and album design, so it was easy to take the time off.
The crazy thing about working from home and being your own boss, is you end up working ALL the time! I find myself at 10pm working on website Search Engine Optimizing (SEO). Only in the last year or so have I stopped taking phone calls or checking email after 7 pm. It’s too hard to sleep when my mind is busy working. : )

So yesterday I packed a bag with a book, my journal, a snack and a bottle of water. I put the bike in the car and took off. No where special, just out. I biked around some neighborhoods that I’ve never seen before. Then found a quiet spot to just relax. It felt SOOOOO good! Wow. I really need to do this more often.

I only took my camera with because this week’s assignement in my showit photo club was “Self Portrait” – otherwise I probably would have left the camera home too. ; )

Ahhh summer. The crazy photography season and yet the time when we want to take days off. It’s all about balance isn’t it?!

Hidden treasures | Fargo Wedding Photography

One of the fun things about making the album is rediscovering images that get lost in the shuffle. So I thought I’d share some more favorites from Ann and Andreas’s wedding a few short weeks ago.

Don’t you just love funny groomsmen?!

And I LOVE it when couples burst out laughing! Wedding days are supposed to be joyful,  I’m always happy to catch those moments!

I will be taking a short *semi* vacation this week. I’ll still check my email once a day but I need a break before the next two CRAZY months hit me. Gota love Wedding Photography Season in Fargo! Short, intense, fast paced, but oh so fun. Then a slow August and the fall insanity right behind. : )

Remember blue skies?

Rain, rain go away

Come again another day

It seems most of the spring has been very gray. So I thought I’d post a photo to remind myself that blue skies exist behind the clouds. I snapped it earlier this week when we had ONE clear day. It almost looks like a fall photo with the red tree – but it is a  spring picture! Let’s hope the blue skies return for a glorious summer!!!

 Happy memorial weekend everyone.

Week 5 – Shadows

My weekly assignment from my online photo club was Shadows this week. I don’t know why but it was really tough for me! I actually went out twice to try to get a good shot. Not that shadows are hard in themselves, but I just didn’t want a cheesy shot of me standing in a road taking a photo of my shadow. Or a photo of hand shadows. Or a photo of grass shadows. You know, the way everyone takes shadow pics when they are assigned. It didn’t help that we had gray weather most of the week!

So last night on our bike ride I brought my older camera (just in case I crashed, gota take care of my equipment you know!) and kept my eyes open for anything interesting. I finally found a place where these shadows were laying across the sidewalk in an pattern. I made my dog lay down and used the shadows as a backdrop for her portrait. I was trying to think outside the usual shadow box and use them as a way to enhance an image instead of being the focus of the image.
