Christmas time is here again

Where has December gone this year?? Seriously someone is changing the calendar without my knowledge.  But thankfully this year we were able to get our Christmas tree before Christmas week! So all is well.

It isn’t Christmas season until we’ve sat down as a family and watched “White Christmas” with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye.  It’s one of those classics you can watch over and over and still laugh at the same jokes. I think my favorite part is when Danny Kaye pretends to hurt his leg so the old General won’t watch the TV program! Or maybe the dance, “The Best Things.”  No actually my FAVORITE part is the opening scene. I think.  Or perhaps the housekeeper when she’s arguing with the General who says he doesn’t need her, and she replies; “It took 15 hundred men to take my place.” lol!  Ok I just love the whole thing.

(And yes, I realize we have a VHS copy, that’s how many years we’ve been watching it lol!)

Can’t watch a Christmas movie without a bit of hot cocoa to cuddle up with. : )

Yup, the holiday season is officially here! Merry Christmas!

What’s your favorite holiday movie?

Finally – a D700!

After searching and waiting for 10 months I finally found a place that had ONE Nikon D700 for sale… and guess who scooped it up?

It’s so beautiful!! And I can not wait for my 2nd shooter to use it at the wedding tomorrow! So exciting to finally have two of these babies. : )

Family Vacation 2011 | Texas!

I was a little nervous about going on our family vacation this year, mostly because of the vandalism that happened to our house last year. *shudder* It took us almost a whole year to recover, rebuild, and unpack again. BUT  thankfully this year our vacation turned out to be super relaxing, exactly what we all needed after the stresses of last year. : )

We chose Texas mostly because dad had meetings down there anyway. We just tagged along the first few days and after he finished up we spent another week as a family on the beach enjoying ourselves. And what better way to extend our short summer than heading south just as the weather turns below freezing. Yeah, sounds like a good plan to me!

The only down side to Texas is the distance. We spent 27 hours in the car both ways; 2 full days of driving down and 2 full days of driving home. That’s a LONG time to be sitting in a little space!!

Light Painting on the highways to cut the boredom:

Finally we arrived in San Antonio! While Dad was busy with his meetings the rest of us wandered around downtown along the amazing river walk. It was gorgeous!

And look (!) the trees still have leaves and they are GREEN!

We spent 2 days just wondering around the whole city. Our hotel came with tokens to ride the trolley so when we got tired of walking we’d hop a trolley and ride its full loop just for fun. The really strange thing about San Antonio (and maybe Texas in general) was the fact that one building or block would be super fancy and well kept and right beside it would be a run down shack that you would expect in the ghetto. So strange.

One of our favorite things to do: crash fancy hotels. We had a good excuse, we needed to find a bathroom.  Actually it was mostly accidental, we’d find a store or visitors center and in the process of trying to find the bathroom we’d end up in an adjoining hotel lobby and from there we’d wonder through until we found what we needed. We saw some pretty fancy places!! A very modern hotel. And a 1920′s hotel. It was probably one of my favorite accidental explorations of the whole trip. Seeing the architecture and decor was super fun!

Back at our own hotel I enjoyed taking pics of my siblings in the outdoor lighted pool!

Our hotel was an older 1960′s style with bright colors: El Tropicana  - the name reminded me of I Love Lucy. : )

When we first checked in there was a whole flight crew in the lobby; pilots and stewardesses. I felt for a split second like I was walking  into the TV show Pan Am. Weird.

And a little bit of fun on the way out: gotta love it!

Then we drove another 4 hours south east to Seaside Texas where we rented a little beach house. Ahhh the beach!! Ocean, Sea life, and of course Gulls!

Let the silly side come out!

I’d love to say I won the race, but I tripped.

Since we were in Texas of course we had to try something new: Nopal

Which turned out to be just a little bit slimy. Although it tasted like sour cucumber so it wasn’t too bad … once you got past the slime.

One day we drove into Galveston. Due to the recent hurricanes lots of the area was pretty run down. But I liked the house below. It reminded me of Villa Villakulla in the Pippi Longstocking movie.

On the wharf we talked to one of the fishermen and he told us he’d only seen snow once in his life, so we told him about the 6 foot drifts we get in our yard. I don’t think he believed us.

Let’s just say the wharf stunk pretty badly. Reeked.  But it made for interesting photos. ; )

Mom found out that we could take a ferry boat for free , so we went out to sea for a 15 minutes ride to a little island. The breeze was perfect, the weather warm, the salty air making our hair sticky.

On the island we walked out on the fishing pier (or rather rock formation) and watched a whole pod of dolphins swim and feed. Too bad they didn’t leap into the air or show their tails, but still super fun to watch!!

Back at our own beach house:

All week long I had “Let’s Go Fly A Kite”  ringing in my head. Marry Poppins would be proud.

I Love how the ocean changed colors depending on the weather. Some days gray, some brown and our last day was a pretty teal green.

Goodbye ocean. Until next time!!

Back into the car for 2 days. Ugh. Sooooo stiff and cramp inducing.

The very last morning we got up before dawn and as we stopped for coffee the sky began to lighted into a pale gray/blue. I noticed a HUGE flock of birds settling on the wire across the street. They filled up every line for over 4 blocks! It was still almost completely dark but I managed to crank my ISO and got this last photo from our trip:

And now I’m home again! Whew. I really enjoyed being away, unplugging (although I did miss the Internet, I wanted to check my email once a day in case I got a wedding request … so I ended up having to drive 15 miles  to the nearest McDonalds with Wi-Fi!) and in general taking a break. But it also feels amazing to be home! You appreciate the little things of home like using your own silverware, or being able to make a pot of tea, or  knowing where the pens are stashed. Yes, it’s good to be home!

October skies

Driving early one morning last week I noticed the sun shining on the golden stubble in a field, and the dark October rain clouds coming up behind. The dramatic colors and textures were just too fun not to try to catch. Thankfully I wasn’t driving so I could snap a few. I really like the way this vertical one turned out … the grass in front blurred by speed ads a fun element. : )

And the horizontal shows the clouds off in all their dreary, chilly, October sky glory:

I do have a soft spot in my heart for the vast skies and wide horizons of North Dakota and norther Minnesota. So open and free!!

The 1980′s is now vintage??!

You know you are getting old when styles ‘coming back’ were styles you wore the first time around. Let’s just take one example. Last week in church I noticed a young guy wearing a neon yellow hoodie. NEON! And then I went on pinterest and all of a sudden I’m seeing neon everywhere!

High fashion websites:

Build your own fashion websites:

Makeup:

And this one really got me, because I remember when my grandma gave me these exact colors for a birthday gift!! Nail Polish:

I even found a whole wedding photoshoot with Neon colors (click here to see that blog!)

Crazy. I can’t be old enough to see a style circle in full!

What trends do you remember from the 80′s?

Fargo Wedding Photographer reaches 2011 goals!

Sorry – I just had to write the title like a major headline because…

Today has been an amazing day for me, I got to cross off two of my 2011 goals in one day!!

#1. I wanted to upgrade my backup camera to a D700. However because of the tsunami in Japan there has been a big shortage. The USA has been sold out of them for months! I finally got on a waiting list since there is a slow trickle of cameras coming out of Japan again.  Today I got that wonderful phone call “We have a D700 are you still interested?” – um YES!!

Goal #1 successfully achieved.

#2. I wanted to save enough this season to be able to go to a conference next year: WPPI – Wedding and Portrait Photographer International. I’ve wanted to go for years but could never afford the flight + hotels + meals for a whole week. Then last night I found out that because I’m a showiteer (I use the program SHOWIT) I qualified for a major deal at the hotel. Almost 1/2 price! And so today I called and booked a room for 4 nights & 5 days to attend WPPI. One. Word. “EEEEEAAAK!!!!” – ok that’s more like a squeal. But hey. A girl can squeal when a dream comes true right?!

Goal #2. Crossed off.

My other 2011 goals were crossed out earlier. I wanted to book X number of weddings and I got within one wedding away from that number so I’m super happy with that.  And I got a laptop. So yeah. I think that I reached every single one of my major goals this year!  oh – and I GRADUATED  from college debt free!!!  <—- That one was pretty big even if it doesn’t have anything to do with my business. ; )

Yup. I’m a pretty happy gal tonight.

Now off to look at flights to WPPI in February. I’ve got some time to find the best deal. ; )

What were your 2011 goals and did you reach them? (Don’t worry if you haven’t, you still have plenty of time left in the year!)

Photography Club Assignment: Negative Space

My photography club has taken a bit of a break as everyone is so busy in the fall!! But this week we got a new assignment: Negative Space. In photography negative space is usually a photo where your subject is on the edge or in a corner and the rest of the frame is blank. It breaks the rule of thirds, the center your subject rule, and the fill the frame with your subject rule. Ok it breaks most of the rules. It’s not a technique I use a lot but I’ve always loved it! I usually shoot about 2-5 negative space images at a wedding. They are more artsy, creative, and usually (unfortunately) not the image a couple wants to frame on the wall. But I love it, so I shoot a few. ; )

I’ve had a busy week so I didn’t want to go out looking for a negative space subject, so I gave myself the added challenge of finding something in the house to photograph. Double-trouble-challenge oh yes!

So I picked up an old typewriter (we actually have 3 in the house!) … and took it onto the sun porch where I set it on our old 70′s retro chair. Perfect backdrop! I chose the typewriter that had hammers that actually stick up high since that made the image in my brain easier to capture.  Moved the chair into the sunlight and voila: instant fun!

I’m posting two here on the blog because I like them both. But I posted the image on the Right (the hammers) for the group because it fit the assignment better. More negative space!

Weekly assignment club

This week’s assignment: Melancholy. Not the easiest of subjects to picture, it’s more like something that words can evoke in poetry.  I really wasn’t sure what to do! I even thought about it while I was falling asleep, “What can I do for this week’s assignment???? … zzzzzZZZ”  (Not that I snore, I’m sure my sister would let me know if I did!)

Anyway I woke up to drizzle and gray skies. Perfect moody day. This weather reminds me of my grandfather’s funeral. A drizzly gray day when I watched raindrops roll across the window on the way to the cemetary. Almost as if the whole world was melancholy. I wanted to capture that emotion again for this assignment so I grabbed my camera and went out to sit in the car.

ISO 400 F5.6 @ 1/40 second

Perfect.

I’ve really enjoyed having a few weeks off this month. That doesn’t happen very often so I cram all my summer fun, reading, visiting grandparents, and random projects into a few weeks! Starting next week I’ll have two back to back weddings and then things will slow down again as the weather cools off.  I HATE to say it, but now that it is September … well I just WON”T say it, maybe that will delay the inevitable. ; )

Reflections

This week’s assignment in my fun photography club is: Reflections.

I just bought a pair of fun sunglasses for .40 cents (yes, a $40 pair of glasses on sale + $10 off cupon = .40 cents paid!) … and I noticed they were extremely reflective.

So I made my sis try them out while she was playing fetch with Elssa I snapped this photo.

ISO 200 F2.8 @ 1/500

I’m using my old camera for all my assignments now because Nikon has sold out of all their D700′s and I don’t want to break mine and not be able to replace it (it scares me just saying that!). There are rumors that Nikon will be announcing a new DSLR camera in the next 2 months, but until they do I’m going to be VERY careful and only use mine for work. I do have backups but my D700 is my favorite camera so it’s being babied right now. ; ) I hope the rumors are true that the next model will include HD video, that would be so fun!! Until then my assignment pics are taken with my 4 year old D80.

It’s been a quieter few weeks for me. Really nice to be caught up on all my editing and design work. To be able to enjoy summer and family! Tomorrow I visit my grandmother who has no internet – not sure how I’ll survive but hopefully I will.  And then life gets crazy again in September!! I’m enjoying time off but also looking forward to being busy with work. It’s such a strange business … one month you work 6 days a week 16 hour days, the next you had nothing to do. So weird. But it keeps life interesting!!

What are your weekend plans?

Foodie confession

I grew up in a family that cooks food from scratch: healthy, real, unprocessed food. And I thought it was normal. Only recently have I begun to realize how un-normal that is! My sister and I will gladly eat a raw green pepper for a snack. And we all LOVE our garden produce. Right now we have buckets of green beans and tons of tomatoes coming out of the 10×10 foot green house. A good problem to have if you ask me. Nothing says summer like a fresh BLT sandwich or fresh tomato and basil spaghetti sauce. Or zucchini boats baked to golden perfection. MMMM.

I really do love good food!! So I thought I’d better ad it to the about me page on my website. : )

I’m not just a veggetable lover; I enjoy a good steak, a piece of rich dutch cheese, strong coffee, black licorice, dark chocolate with any kind of nuts … I guess you could say I have European taste buds. lol! Strong, rich flavor in small amounts. Although I do LOVE Asian food too. Hot and spicy, burn your mouth curry. Peanut sauces over grilled chicken, and aromatic Jasmin rice. Ok I just love good food. : )

I actually took the tomato photo for my club assignment last week. The assignment was (of course) Food!

ISO 200 F2.8 @ 1/1000 second

For those wanting the recipe it’s easy: Slice a tomato, stuff it with fresh basil leaves. Ad some cheese, a drip of olive oil, salt and pepper.

Easy! And oh so yummy!

So there you have it.  What are your favorite foods??

Fargo Air Show 2011

This weekend if you were anywhere near Fargo you knew the Air Show was in town – because the Blue Angles were practicing with their Jets all over the skies leaving a trail of thunder behind them. It was a perfect, gorgeous weekend for a day out in the sunshine! The whole atmosphere was like a fair or carnival: people, the smell of hot dogs and cotton candy, music, loud speakers, Navy bands and of course -air planes!

We arrived just as the WWII planes were showing off. I’m a history lover, and WWII era is one of my favorite time periods to study so this was super cool for me!

The B-25 bomber was amazing:

They also had Spitfires. Every time I saw it zoom past I kept hearing the theme song from Foyle’s War in my head (in the series Foyle’s son flies a spitfire). I was amazed at how fast it could go considering it is about 70 years old! How would you like to look up and see hundreds of these flying overhead? A scary or hopeful sight depending on who you were I imagine.

One of the other things that amazed me was how distinct the sound of the WWII engine is. They would start up out of sight and I KNEW it was a WWII plane. Maybe I’ve watched too many old movies but they definitely have their own sound as well as look. A deep throbbing sound.

I love the shot below of the B-25 props – notice all the people in the reflection. : ) Can you spot me?

We even got to stick out heads up inside (although we couldn’t actually go in) … it felt like stepping back in time. The look, the color of the paint, the empty space full of stories and ghosts of past missions.

Turn the image black and white and all of a sudden you ARE back in time. Who sat in these seats?

Love this shot of the crowd: A guy holding his wife & child up to see better!

Tons of other planes to explore: Fat Albert

After the WWII planes then the stunt fliers swooped and spun. Flipping in ways that made you wonder “HOW do they do that?!”

And then the highlight of the show: The BLUE ANGELS!!

Look at how close together they are? And at 300-500 MPH!

How do they not crash?

Every time they swooped down it was silent until they were right above you and then ROAR!!! The sound vibrated your chest.

Even the fire fighters on duty climbed up high to enjoyed the show.

And the grand finale:

Whew. What an exciting weekend! I sunburned my nose which is a sign of good old summer fun. : )

What did you do for fun this week??

James | Senior 2011 | Streets of Fargo

I don’t know how it worked out, but we managed to sneak in a photoshoot between rain showers today. As we were leaving the studio it poured, and as we drove home it poured, but not while we were out on the streets of  downtown Fargo. Perfect timing!!

So here’s a peek from today’s shoot:

Love the red sneakers with the red wall!

My Dream:

I think dreams are important. They spur us to action, inspiration, and give life that sparkle of  joy over having something to aim at. Over the last year a new dream has been emerging in my heart. So last week I redesigned my inspiration board to include it. And of course I had to photograph it to share with you:

I’m drooling over this workshop by Kenny Kim .  It looks so amazing! I love the fact that it’s a small intimate group of photographers, perfect for making new friends. I always feel like I learn so much just hanging out with other photographers, and shooting together!! And ITALY, o my, I think every stone in that country is blessed with beauty. It just tugs at me to photograph it! So. Beautiful.

I’ve started saving all my coins in a puple velvet box. This will be my “Mad Money” to buy souvenirs, eat out, and of course sample some gelato. The rest of the tuition … well  I’m hoping by 2012 I can live my dream!

What are you dreaming about??

Kari + John | full version

My favorite thing about working with John + Kari was how creative they let me be! Plus they were way too easy to work with (spoiling me!). Which makes for pretty special photos!

We started in the barn, where the cat decided to join us. I just love how he adds a touch of random real life to the photo!

And these amazing trees with the sun shining through leading the eyes right down to the couple. Amazing.

The couple out of focus behind the grass makes this photo feel like the couple is in their own world.

Thankfully those storm clouds in the distance were blowing AWAY not towards us.:)

The tone of this one reminds me of the Forrest in S. Carolina and Florida, sort of mossy.

But there’s no doubt that we are in the red river valley! Beets, soy, wheat, gravel roads. I love how close the countryside is to Fargo / Moorhead!

I love it when couples are so comfortable with me that they start swing dancing moves, and aren’t afraid to show a little passion!

Summer sun. Wind. Love.

I’m going to be out of the studio until July 12, so if you need to contact me please e-mail! Once this week is over I’m looking forward to spending a lot of time working on updating my website, shooting more, and updating facebook/twitter/blog more too!

Fun times ahead | better look out

New Camera | Nikon D700

After a LONG time saving up I upgraded my D80 to a D700!! I will definitely keep my two D80 cameras as back ups, but I’m super excited about this new beauty. It came witha manual that’s just about as thick as a phone book, so it might be a while before I’m totally sure of all the buttons, but it’s going to be fun learning!

Watch out Fargo, here I come!

It’s so pretty. *sigh*

Bloopers and paper-cuts | the saga

I just spent a LOT of time fixing one page on my website: the contact me page. I had this really cool idea of a photo of me with falling envelopes (you know, “contact me”).

Easy right?

Well … NO.

DO you know how HARD it is to coordinate falling envelopes? They are worse than babies and dogs combined. Very fickle indeed.

After a long shoot (and three paper-cuts later) I finally had a photo I liked, until I put it on my website. I realized that the colors of the envelopes clashed with the mood of my site… Orange and Yellow don’t do great with Gray/Green peaceful tones. Soooo back to the backdrop in another outfit, with only green and blue envelopes. Success!!

Below are some of the outtakes and rejects. Enjoy!

And the photo I chose… drum roll…

Tada!  Go check it out on the contact me page of my website: Here

2 friends | 2 cameras

On Easter Sunday a dear friend of mine (who also happens to be a photographer, check her out at: Studio A Photo ) was in town!! Of course we had to grab our equipment and take a photo walk together. We found some fantastic new locations right around downtown Fargo.

This corner is just amazing, it has so many nooks and crannies and backgrounds all within feet of each other!! Loved it!

The crazy architecture and structure:

The interesting ‘thing’ we found, and what a pretty color it is too!. Perfect for posing with our cameras, (I’ll post the pics of me once I get a copy).

Yup, this was what I was looking at half the time. It’s interesting being on the opposite side of a camera, I learned a lot about modeling, and got some neat ideas for how to make others comfortable when they are  in this position:

I don’t know what it is about color that just thrills me. Maybe it runs in the family. My great grandfather was a house painter and had to mix his own colors. People from all over the city would call him because he could ‘eye’ the color to match perfectly with what they already had on the walls. I notice that I have a similar gift when working in digital art, matching color is very easy for me. And you will notice that I am drawn towards color in my images. ;)

That last photo was taken with the camera held over my head. It isn’t perfectly framed, but I love the slightly off kilter feel.

Till next time, enjoy the colors in your world!

Spring has Sprung

“Spring is when you feel like whistling even with a shoe full of slush” ~ Doug Larson

In honor of the fact that the last snow in my back yard FINALLY melted, I’m posting some spring pics from last year!!

This location is probably familiar to most people in Fargo/Moorhead … Concordia College! The beautiful campus sports a gorgeous pond and fountain that are perfect for romantic shots. I just love the engagement pics I took there last year; the different shades of green on the trees, the moss, and the bright blue top K wore that day. Perfection!

A specail moment caught adds romance to the already stellar scenery…

Not only is the pond fun for romantics, but seniors love it too! The country feel in the middle of the city makes it easy to get a wide variety of looks within a few blocks. Fargo / Moorhead rock!

Happy spring everyone! Let the photo shoots begin.

Woot, Woot!! All Aboard!

Next stop in our Fargo search for wedding, engagement and senior locations:  the Trains!

Located at the Historic Train Depot downtown these trains are simple FUN. They always bring out the playful side of people!

Brilliant RED pops (!)  in the photographs.

The Blue cars and their fabulous wheels shout URBAN FLAIR!

Action Shot of me at work:

Seniors love the caboose too!

Doesn’t it make you want to take a train ride!!

Pack your bags; we’re going to the train depot!

The second location I’m going to cover is a well known local landmark!

Built in 1898 the Train Depot was the first building in Fargo to enter the National Register of Historic Places. It is now part of the Fargo Public Park District, and a favorite location for may wedding photographers!! Ironically it has this sign over the door:

I love taking photos here because it is a constantly changing, exciting and fun place. The seasons bring very different looks.

Summer brings bright, warm light off of the red bricks. And the vibrant gardens surrounding the depot make it a lush and cheerful place!

Fall brings more warm tones. Even the trees across the street bring in more color!

In the  spring before the gardens are planted the Depot has a unique vintage feel. The overhanging roof make it ideal for photographs even with spring showers!

Can I say Perfect Location!!!

And one last shot of my Brother and his wife. Just because I love them!!

Next week … the TRAINS at the depot!
