Frost in Fargo

A few weeks ago we had the most amazing few foggy days here in Fargo. It was so mysterious and ethereal. Maybe not the most fun to drive in but for a photographer fog is pretty sweet. I went for a walk with my brother one night and as we passed by the local outdoor ice skating rink I noticed a dad teaching his little girl how to skate. It was such a sweet moment:

Because of the fog the next day we had gorgeous frost on all the branches! So beautiful. My siblings and I were headed down to Minneapolis to visit my other brother (and for me to shoot Jake and Leah’s engagement session). As we were driving I decided I had to pull over and take a few photos. Turned out to be some of the most fun pictures ever! My sis and I were fighting over the camera we both wanted to take photos so bad!!

It was like we stepped into Narnia. One of my favorite quotes from C.S. Lewis’s The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe is when Mr Tumnus finds Lucy in the snowy wood by the lamp post: ”It is winter in Narnia, and has been for ever so long, and we shall both catch cold if we stand here talking in the snow. Daughter of Eve from the far land of Spare Oom where eternal summer reigns around the bright city of War Drobe, how would it be if you came and had tea with me?”

My other favorite quote from the same book:

“Wrong will be right, when Aslan comes in sight,
At the sound of his roar, sorrows will be no more,
When he bares his teeth, winter meets its death
And when he shakes his mane, we shall have spring again.”

Gahhh isn’t my sister an amazing photographer!! These are some of my favorite photos of me. Even though I didn’t do my hair or makeup that day, I still love them!

And of course I had to get a few of my brother too…

I had way too much fun with the frost. Way too much. Actually this next week is probably going to be way too much fun too. I’m heading out to Vegas on Sunday for the Wedding and Portrait Photographers International convention for 5 days. Excited doesn’t even begin to describe how much I’m looking forward to meeting so many of my online photographer friends, learn tons of info, be inspired, stay in a gorgeous suite, meet more friends, and in general love the life I’ve been given! Expect a long post when I get home!!

Starry starry snow

I remember seeing a photo that Bob Davis took in the rain where each raindrop became a jewel. I wanted to take photos like that … so I did.

With the exception of snow instead of rain, lol!

The trick is to set up your external flash with a radio receiver (I use radio poppers) and put it behind the subject pointing slightly up (approx 45 degrees) so it catches more  snowflakes but still points towards the camera so it can rim light your subject. By the time I got outside the snow had mostly stopped so pointing the flash up caught more snow in the air.

The 2nd flash is slightly to the left, and the flash on my camera (the master) pointing to the right  and slightly down to catch the ground snow and reflect light back up at me.

It was a bit tricky to get just right but wow, how fun (except for the numb fingers from handling my metal flash stands)!

Bob Davis has a great tutorial for snow portraits HERE on his Facebook page.

Favorite photo of the night: Elssa jumping in my arms!

Aren’t her ears crazy?!

The Quiet Season for Wedding Photography in Fargo.

Winter. The quiet wedding photography season. Not many brides want to have their weddings when it’s -20 degrees and the chance of a blizzard canceling the whole event! So what do I do in the winter?  I work on a lot of behind the scenes (not so exciting) things like sales taxes, website updates, and SEO (search engine optimizing – basically get my google rank higher).

It’s not all boring though, I have more time for fun things like reading too. Right now I’m on a young adult/Junior fiction kick. It’s a genre I haven’t read much before so I’m enjoying the surprise of great reads! I used to think YA books were all yuck and romance, but I’ve found some very interesting adventures, mysteries, and creative plots! To curl up with a cup of hot tea and read for a few hours without the guilt of editing hanging over my head is refreshing. ; )

One of the main things I’m spending time on right now is a new business venture – not photography related. I can’t reveal it until I get the website set up. It’s in the foundation stages right now, searching keywords on google, learning how to market the subject, planning out the timeline, researching data to write about in the blog posts for the new website, listening to business podcasts to get tips on launching an online business and generating traffic. It’s such a new world for me because my photography business has been  word of mouth oriented, so to start a new online project from scratch is a bit overwhelming. I feel like I have a 1,000 piece puzzle to fit together!

It will be awesome to generate a business I can work on in the winters when my photography is slow (and no income is coming in). And one I won’t need to babysit in the summer when I’m shooting 5 weddings in a row and don’t have extra time to invest in a 2nd job. I’m really excited about the possibilities!

How exciting is that!

Adventure Calls | Fargo wedding photographer going to WPPI!

I’m going to WPPI this year (the Wedding and Portrait Photographers International convention in Vegas)! It’s something that I’ve been wanting to do for years. Yet another thing to cross of that bucket list!

I will be focusing on a small sub-workshop since the overall convention is HUGE; 14,000 photographers from around the world descend on the city! My smaller workshop will have about 200-300 people, most of whom I’ve gotten to know online this year via Showit. They are probably the most passionate, talented group of photographers I’ve ever gotten to know. Being together in person is going to be awesome!

We also have amazing speakers including  Jasmine Star, business coach Jeff Jochum, and Zach and Jody Gray, plus many others! It’s going to be 3 intense days of study, fun, networking, and more talking than I can handle! I have a feeling when I come home I’m not going to be able to say another word for a week!

It’s kind of silly, but one of the things I’m looking forward to is flying down. I’ve always loved flying, airports are magical places full of stories. People watching is the best! And since the convention is mid Feb. I’ll be able to fly away from winter for a few days! That is, if winter decides to show up this year. ; )

WPPI will be my first adventure of the year, but definitely not my last.

I just renewed my passport this week.

Somehow that little blue book gives off the feeling of freedom and anticipation.

I’m going to need it for a trip coming up, but you’ll just have to wait and find out where later. ; )

2012 – and so it begins

New Years Eve was a blast! My brother and his wife were here for a few days, so that means laughter was frequent. Ad in some family friends and the whole night was full of  jokes, puns, (a few groaners), and stories!  Our friends brought some interesting traditional ‘treats’ …  kippered herring and smoked oysters –  in a can.  When they opened the cans I kid you not, my exact words were, “Eeeeeww!”  The boys however all thought is was hilarious to dare each other to eat it and, “Prove their manhood” – boys. I will never quite understand them, but at the same time it was very entertaining. ; ) They even gave an oyster to my dog Elssa, but she’s a smart puppy and spit it out.  All I can say is the kitchen smelled very fishy by the time they were done. Oh, and AFTER they ate everything  the expiration date was discovered… 2009. Double EEEEWWWW.

Besides the fish we did have some amazing food too. Mom made Indonesian peanut sauce on chicken, and dutch traditional Oliebollen (a kind of donuts), and of course a cheesecake.  That’s more like my kind of food.:)

The whole evening we played games, Dutch blitz (we of Dutch heritage ruled of course, sweeping the tournament 1,2,3!), a Dice game involving a santa hat and three tables, and 4 on a couch took us to midnight. We toasted in the new year with confetti and sparkeling cider, turned on some swing music and danced in the dining room until 1:00 am. Now that’s the way to bring in a new year!!

Unfortunately I didn’t take out my camera all evening. Sometimes I just like to live in the moment instead of always documenting it. As much as I love my camera there are times I’m also tired of it. So the only photo I got was one of the left over confetti mess …

This week I’ve been fighting a cold so I haven’t spent too much time on my 2012 goals yet, but one of my desires for this year is to get back into the blogging habit. To share more of my quirky experiences, daily life, dog photos, silly stories.  Ye Be Warned.

Happy 2012!!

Christmas time is here again

Where has December gone this year?? Seriously someone is changing the calendar without my knowledge.  But thankfully this year we were able to get our Christmas tree before Christmas week! So all is well.

It isn’t Christmas season until we’ve sat down as a family and watched “White Christmas” with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye.  It’s one of those classics you can watch over and over and still laugh at the same jokes. I think my favorite part is when Danny Kaye pretends to hurt his leg so the old General won’t watch the TV program! Or maybe the dance, “The Best Things.”  No actually my FAVORITE part is the opening scene. I think.  Or perhaps the housekeeper when she’s arguing with the General who says he doesn’t need her, and she replies; “It took 15 hundred men to take my place.” lol!  Ok I just love the whole thing.

(And yes, I realize we have a VHS copy, that’s how many years we’ve been watching it lol!)

Can’t watch a Christmas movie without a bit of hot cocoa to cuddle up with. : )

Yup, the holiday season is officially here! Merry Christmas!

What’s your favorite holiday movie?

Snow Flurries

“There were snow flurries in the air today
early for my liking, snow flurries coming
in small singular spirals, falling through the air
spun by their shapes, the tug of the wind
sitting in the office, watching them tumble
by my window, pause in the conversation with client
marvel for a moment at the ballet before me
forward scouts for their brethren to follow
later in the season when fall yields to winter
soon enough they will come, in legions”

~ Snow Flurries by Raymond Foss

Happy Thanksgiving week everyone!!

Family Vacation 2011 | Texas!

I was a little nervous about going on our family vacation this year, mostly because of the vandalism that happened to our house last year. *shudder* It took us almost a whole year to recover, rebuild, and unpack again. BUT  thankfully this year our vacation turned out to be super relaxing, exactly what we all needed after the stresses of last year. : )

We chose Texas mostly because dad had meetings down there anyway. We just tagged along the first few days and after he finished up we spent another week as a family on the beach enjoying ourselves. And what better way to extend our short summer than heading south just as the weather turns below freezing. Yeah, sounds like a good plan to me!

The only down side to Texas is the distance. We spent 27 hours in the car both ways; 2 full days of driving down and 2 full days of driving home. That’s a LONG time to be sitting in a little space!!

Light Painting on the highways to cut the boredom:

Finally we arrived in San Antonio! While Dad was busy with his meetings the rest of us wandered around downtown along the amazing river walk. It was gorgeous!

And look (!) the trees still have leaves and they are GREEN!

We spent 2 days just wondering around the whole city. Our hotel came with tokens to ride the trolley so when we got tired of walking we’d hop a trolley and ride its full loop just for fun. The really strange thing about San Antonio (and maybe Texas in general) was the fact that one building or block would be super fancy and well kept and right beside it would be a run down shack that you would expect in the ghetto. So strange.

One of our favorite things to do: crash fancy hotels. We had a good excuse, we needed to find a bathroom.  Actually it was mostly accidental, we’d find a store or visitors center and in the process of trying to find the bathroom we’d end up in an adjoining hotel lobby and from there we’d wonder through until we found what we needed. We saw some pretty fancy places!! A very modern hotel. And a 1920′s hotel. It was probably one of my favorite accidental explorations of the whole trip. Seeing the architecture and decor was super fun!

Back at our own hotel I enjoyed taking pics of my siblings in the outdoor lighted pool!

Our hotel was an older 1960′s style with bright colors: El Tropicana  - the name reminded me of I Love Lucy. : )

When we first checked in there was a whole flight crew in the lobby; pilots and stewardesses. I felt for a split second like I was walking  into the TV show Pan Am. Weird.

And a little bit of fun on the way out: gotta love it!

Then we drove another 4 hours south east to Seaside Texas where we rented a little beach house. Ahhh the beach!! Ocean, Sea life, and of course Gulls!

Let the silly side come out!

I’d love to say I won the race, but I tripped.

Since we were in Texas of course we had to try something new: Nopal

Which turned out to be just a little bit slimy. Although it tasted like sour cucumber so it wasn’t too bad … once you got past the slime.

One day we drove into Galveston. Due to the recent hurricanes lots of the area was pretty run down. But I liked the house below. It reminded me of Villa Villakulla in the Pippi Longstocking movie.

On the wharf we talked to one of the fishermen and he told us he’d only seen snow once in his life, so we told him about the 6 foot drifts we get in our yard. I don’t think he believed us.

Let’s just say the wharf stunk pretty badly. Reeked.  But it made for interesting photos. ; )

Mom found out that we could take a ferry boat for free , so we went out to sea for a 15 minutes ride to a little island. The breeze was perfect, the weather warm, the salty air making our hair sticky.

On the island we walked out on the fishing pier (or rather rock formation) and watched a whole pod of dolphins swim and feed. Too bad they didn’t leap into the air or show their tails, but still super fun to watch!!

Back at our own beach house:

All week long I had “Let’s Go Fly A Kite”  ringing in my head. Marry Poppins would be proud.

I Love how the ocean changed colors depending on the weather. Some days gray, some brown and our last day was a pretty teal green.

Goodbye ocean. Until next time!!

Back into the car for 2 days. Ugh. Sooooo stiff and cramp inducing.

The very last morning we got up before dawn and as we stopped for coffee the sky began to lighted into a pale gray/blue. I noticed a HUGE flock of birds settling on the wire across the street. They filled up every line for over 4 blocks! It was still almost completely dark but I managed to crank my ISO and got this last photo from our trip:

And now I’m home again! Whew. I really enjoyed being away, unplugging (although I did miss the Internet, I wanted to check my email once a day in case I got a wedding request … so I ended up having to drive 15 miles  to the nearest McDonalds with Wi-Fi!) and in general taking a break. But it also feels amazing to be home! You appreciate the little things of home like using your own silverware, or being able to make a pot of tea, or  knowing where the pens are stashed. Yes, it’s good to be home!

Adventures on the road to Grandma’s house

Last Friday was just one of those days. You know the kind. You wake up all excited and happy and then everything slowly falls apart until you have the choice of either crying or laughing hysterically. Yep. One of THOSE days.

My mom, sis and I were planning on being on the road to visit my grandma by noon. Well, things just kept going wrong all morning. We needed to make some bread to leave with my dad and brother, but we didn’t have time, so we made scones instead. Except I added too much soy milk and they got super sticky. So mom added more flour which poofed all over the kitchen. And then somehow a bit of dough ended up on the floor and mom tracked the sticky stuff all over the kitchen before we noticed. This is what comes out of trying to bake in a hurry! It took about an hour to clean up.

Then my bro asked us to mail one of his etsy sales on our way out of town (he makes awesome hand turned wood items which you can check out here!). So we headed out to the post office -which had a LONG line of course. We finally get to the counter and the lady told us we couldn’t mail this particular box to France because it had “Priority”  printed on it. So we had to trek back to the house, repackage the whole thing, go back to the post office and finally mail the silly box. By this time it was 3:30 in the afternoon.

On the road!! Yes!! We drove from Fargo to Bismarck – about 3.5 hours and decided to stop for something to eat. 3 hamburgurs and choclate shakes later we happily get into the car, drive 2 blocks and hear this flapping noise from the front right. oh, NO. It can’t be. We just bought new tires last week (seriously!). We pulled off the road and sure enough:

Great! At this point we reached the laughing hysterically side of things. Empty out all our suitcases and pillows to get to the spare. Call Dad. Call AAA.  We actually stopped right beside the Bismarck Cemetery so my sis and I wandered around trying to find our great-grandparents graves (no luck) – and pointing out neat names. Gustuv, Ludwig, Odessa, Laverne, Otto, Jerome, Hildaguard. Actually quite entertaining.

The AAA guy came and put on our spare, and told us to check out Sears across the street since they were open for another 20 mintues (it was 7:35 on a Friday night – everything else in town was closed!). So we rushed over and got in at the very last minute before they locked up for the weekend. Whew. It wouldn’t have been fun to be stranded over the weekend!  I’m so thankful the flat came while we were in Bismarck, we could easily have been 100 miles in the middle of nowhere! Most of North Dakota looks like this:

Beautiful but not exactly where you want to have a flat tire. God seems to enjoy taking care of us!!

We finally arrived at my Grandma’s house at about 9:30pm, so nice to see her again! Visiting, drinking her so-pale-it-could-be-herbal-tea coffee, and listening to stories.

And so our “Terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day” turned out just fine after all.  (Bonus points to anyone who loves that book!)

A few more pics from the road:

I snapped the next two out of the window at 80 mph – but I liked the blurred edges.

 All’s well that ends well.

Until later!

Foodie confession

I grew up in a family that cooks food from scratch: healthy, real, unprocessed food. And I thought it was normal. Only recently have I begun to realize how un-normal that is! My sister and I will gladly eat a raw green pepper for a snack. And we all LOVE our garden produce. Right now we have buckets of green beans and tons of tomatoes coming out of the 10×10 foot green house. A good problem to have if you ask me. Nothing says summer like a fresh BLT sandwich or fresh tomato and basil spaghetti sauce. Or zucchini boats baked to golden perfection. MMMM.

I really do love good food!! So I thought I’d better ad it to the about me page on my website. : )

I’m not just a veggetable lover; I enjoy a good steak, a piece of rich dutch cheese, strong coffee, black licorice, dark chocolate with any kind of nuts … I guess you could say I have European taste buds. lol! Strong, rich flavor in small amounts. Although I do LOVE Asian food too. Hot and spicy, burn your mouth curry. Peanut sauces over grilled chicken, and aromatic Jasmin rice. Ok I just love good food. : )

I actually took the tomato photo for my club assignment last week. The assignment was (of course) Food!

ISO 200 F2.8 @ 1/1000 second

For those wanting the recipe it’s easy: Slice a tomato, stuff it with fresh basil leaves. Ad some cheese, a drip of olive oil, salt and pepper.

Easy! And oh so yummy!

So there you have it.  What are your favorite foods??

Early memories + Bow – tie pasta

I have a favorite pasta shape. Do you?

Maybe it’s a weird thing to even have a favorite, but it’s true. I love  bow-ties AKA: butterflies. Technically named Farfalle. Why you may ask? Well one of my earliest memories is when I was about 4 years old, sitting at the table eating bow-tie noodles in Germany. My only other German memory was my preschool teacher / daycare leader only had one hand – her other arm a stump, yet she amazed me that she could tie my shoes and I couldn’t do it with two hands!! Such talent. : )  Funny what we remember isn’t it. Farfalle and a one handed teacher. We only lived in Germany for about 8 weeks while my parents were training for work in Africa, so it’s pretty amazing that I remember anything from that short period of time!

Anyway, I think of those memories every time I have bow-tie pasta for lunch – like today.

Ok, enough sentimentality over noodles! Sheesh.
