Hidden treasures | Fargo Wedding Photography

One of the fun things about making the album is rediscovering images that get lost in the shuffle. So I thought I’d share some more favorites from Ann and Andreas’s wedding a few short weeks ago.

Don’t you just love funny groomsmen?!

And I LOVE it when couples burst out laughing! Wedding days are supposed to be joyful,  I’m always happy to catch those moments!

I will be taking a short *semi* vacation this week. I’ll still check my email once a day but I need a break before the next two CRAZY months hit me. Gota love Wedding Photography Season in Fargo! Short, intense, fast paced, but oh so fun. Then a slow August and the fall insanity right behind. : )

Remember blue skies?

Rain, rain go away

Come again another day

It seems most of the spring has been very gray. So I thought I’d post a photo to remind myself that blue skies exist behind the clouds. I snapped it earlier this week when we had ONE clear day. It almost looks like a fall photo with the red tree – but it is a  spring picture! Let’s hope the blue skies return for a glorious summer!!!

 Happy memorial weekend everyone.

Week 5 – Shadows

My weekly assignment from my online photo club was Shadows this week. I don’t know why but it was really tough for me! I actually went out twice to try to get a good shot. Not that shadows are hard in themselves, but I just didn’t want a cheesy shot of me standing in a road taking a photo of my shadow. Or a photo of hand shadows. Or a photo of grass shadows. You know, the way everyone takes shadow pics when they are assigned. It didn’t help that we had gray weather most of the week!

So last night on our bike ride I brought my older camera (just in case I crashed, gota take care of my equipment you know!) and kept my eyes open for anything interesting. I finally found a place where these shadows were laying across the sidewalk in an pattern. I made my dog lay down and used the shadows as a backdrop for her portrait. I was trying to think outside the usual shadow box and use them as a way to enhance an image instead of being the focus of the image.

Angie + Brady | Fargo Engagement Photography Session!

Have I mentioned lately how much I LOVE my job. Because I totally do.  Engagement sessions are so fun. The whole evening relaxed, fun, enjoying each other, getting to know each other. No pressure, just fun!

I love how their eyes just pop with the color she is wearing. Nice coordination Angie!!

Laughter is the best! I told him to whisper something in her ear, and he said “You look gorgeous, and I can’t wait for our cheeseburgers, I’m hungry” lol! Gota love it!

Amazing light in the next one. So soft and perfect for the loving look they gave each other…

And of course we had to do something with the Fargo Theatre. You just have to if you are down town. Who cares if everyone does it, it’s just cool!

Then I took them to a new location that I scouted just that afternoon. The light was so warm and summery. Loves.

And look at those eyes! No photoshop here. Just amazing.

I love it when clients are so up for whatever I suggest. As we were walking back to the car I noticed these mud flats. They were dry, so not muddy, but I bet they were not very comfortable to lay on! But Angie and Brady were troopers. So fun to try something new!

And now a  FAQ about engagement sessions: What should I wear for my engagement photos?

Week 4 assignment – F8

So I got a head start on this week’s assignment. Shoot a photo at f8. (For you non-photographers that is a lens setting which isn’t used very often in portrait photography, so it’s out of our comfort zone)

I was going to wait until later this week to shoot it, but I was walking by my desk an noticed the sunlight pouring through my glass making a very magical pattern. I just grabbed my camera and snapped.

f8 @250, ISO 800. Shot with my 35mm1.8 lens.

Tomorrow is another engagement session, and then I’m taking some baby pics (I only shoot babies for past clients, otherwise I am 100% weddings now) on Thursday. So a busy few days coming up!

I’m so glad the weather is gorgeous this week!

I’ve also got some new things up my sleve for the next few weeks (think video), so you’ll want to check back soon!

“And it was ALLLLLL YELLOW”

My club assignment last week was “Yellow” – Easy right? Well yes and no. Yellow is everywhere. But because it’s everywhere you have to find something interesting. I had an idea in mind but it rained all week so I had to go to my second choice for subjects.

Can you guess what this is:

 It’s a tulip petal!!

I wanted to do something different, an abstract art piece that made you LOOK at it instead of glance.

Plus lots of people had submitted flowers as subjects and I wanted  to approach the topic outside the usual way of looking at things. To stretch my abilities and techniques.

I used the good old  “Poor man’s macro” trick with my 35mm 1.8 lens.  Super close up. It’s REALLY hard to keep anything in focus when you have that small of a window for depth of field, any breath makes things sway in and out of focus. So it was difficult to get the effect that I wanted. I held my breath a lot, which then made me pant like I’d been exercising, which made me look ridiculous! But hey, anything for a great shot right!

Yellow actually has a great personal memory for me. When my brother and his wife were dating they wanted to do something fun for our whole family. So they made a “yellow meal” … everything was yellow! The table cloths, the paper plates, the food. Corn,  lemonade, yellow bell peppers, golden potatoes, bananas. It may not have been the most balanced meal, but it was fun!  And they made a music mix of songs that used the word “yellow” so everytime we heard it we had to yell “yelloooooow.”  Do you know how many songs use the word yellow?

  • The Yellow Submarine.
  • It was all Yellow.
  •  Itsy Bitsy, Tiny weeny, yellow polka dot bikini.
  • She Wore a  Yellow Ribbon in Her Hair.
  •  Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree.
  • the Yellow Brick Road

Yeah a LOT.

So that’s my Yellow story. And my Yellow picture.

But I look yeaack in Yellow, so you won’t catch me wearing it.

Ann + Andreas | Fargo / Moorhead Wedding Photography

Back to Saturday’s wedding. : )

(click here for 1st teaser blog post!)

Sorry to bounce you back and forth. I like to post teasers the day of or day after a session so that my clients can get a look at a few photos. When I do my main editing I post more. So when I get back to back shoots it can be a little like playing tennis with my blog posts! Engagement,Wedding, Engagement, Wedding. Although it isn’t a fair game, since a wedding has so many more photos it always wins. ; )

Dress: Alan Evans – Moorhead

Flowers: Swensons Floral

Reception and Catering: the Avalon

These are just a few favorites I pulled out to create their personalized website. I’ll be posting more as I find treasures hidden in the mass of photos!!

Fargo Engagement Session!

Ok, back to last Friday’s engagement session. Since I had a wedding on Saturday I’m trying really hard to keep from falling behind, so I edited the engagement session first thing on Monday. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep up since I have two more shoots this week (and last saturday’s wedding!). Whew. The busy season is upon us!

Emily and Ryan had a buy weekend too, traveling to Minneapolis to a friends wedding and then a baptism on Sunday. I was thankful that they took the time while they were in Fargo to do their Engagement session!!

Emily and Ryan teaser

Emily and Ryan  live a fair ways away from Fargo, so we only had one shot at getting their engagement photos. Thankfully the weather turned out great!

I’m in a bit of a hurry tonight as I have a wedding tomorrow and need to get my equipment packed up, so we’ll just leave this post about the photos. ; )

I’ll be posting more next week as I edit so come back!!

Showit meetup

Have I mentioned in the last week how much I love SHOWIT? Yeah, I know I talk about it a lot. It’s just so much more than a computer software, it’s a community. And yesterday we had a gathering of the Fargo area chapter of Showiteers. Originally there were 5 of us going to attend, but three had to drop out last minute. So it was just Lindsay Kaye and myself + the models. But it was F-U-N to get out and shoot with no pressure!

Mallory and Eric were amazing. You’d never know that she had never done anything like this before. Such a natural!

That last photo is my favorite. It’s one I’ve had in my mind for a while but never had a chance to actually try to capture it. LOVE the way it turned out!!!

I can’t wait for our next showiteer meeting … hopefully everyone will be able to come out!!

Wedding Photography Season Starts NOW

I dream a lot about photographing weddings. Usually horror situations. When I shot film I used to have this dream where my camera would pop open and the film canister would fall out of my camera, unraveling as it bounced up the aisle, exposing and ruining the whole roll as I ran in slow motion screaming “NOOOOOOOO” – yes I have a dramatic mind.

But last night I was dreaming about the fun side of my job. Working with couples. Looking at the light and situation I’m thrown into and making it work. In my dream last night it was a windy, bright day. I was talking the bride into going outside to get some cool shots of her veil blowing in the wind.

The reason my mind has been turning this way is probably two fold.

#1 the Royal wedding last week, and all the media around it got my mind spinning.

#2. My wedding season starts in earnest this Saturday.

Yes I did a wedding in February, but this is the start of a pretty busy summer schedule! I’m excited to get back behind the lens! I am hoping that the forecasted rain for the weekend goes away, but even if it doesn’t I’ve got a few ideas on some cool things we could do after the ceremony – imagine downtown Fargo with all the lights reflecting on the wet pavement. As long as it’s not pouring rain I think we could snap a few fun shots!!

So stay tuned, the Wedding Season has begun!
