Dance Party | College Complete!

Today has been a glorious day. Well it started out with a lot of butterflies, but by 2:30 it was fabulous. You see, I tested out of my LAST college class!!! It’s been 11 years since I took my first class, and now I am FINALLY, done. Done studying. Done testing out. Done. It hasn’t sunk in yet. But I can tell you I am relieved to be finished with Math anyway! And yes, I hit it out of the park.

Math is now afraid of ME.

My mom snapped these photos when I got home:

Dance Party with Elssa!

The next three are important. I’ve been keeping a list of all the courses I needed to test out of. Each one has been crossed out except the last. So I was pretty excited to mark it off of the list! We had out the video camera and everything.

Look at my face! Wow, I’m a little psyched.

 Finished.

I feel like I’ve run an 11 year mental marathon. And won.

Debt free.

College degree.

Oh yeah baby.

Chocolate cake tonight!

Have you ever done something that has been very hard, but rewarding?

Teaser | Anne and Gregory

Just a real quick teaser for Anne and Gregory. I’m having a crazy week, so hopefully I’ll get more up after the 28th.  Enjoy!

The dance was at the Fargo Air Museum. I’ll do a whole post about it soon!

The world is my studio

The next slide from my About Me page on my website:

Travel

Sometimes I take for granted that I have touched oceans all over the world, lived in tropical locations, eaten spicy curry that would burn an American’s mouth, and smelled exotic flowers crazy beyond imagining. Sometimes I forget that this effects the way I see the world. My curiosity for life, for education, for color, and taste was born out of these things. My love for language, literature and English came out of speaking 3 languages as a child.

I am who I am because of touching the world.

But more than that: SEEING the world.

My visual self grew up with stark sandy textures of Africa, Crisp and mossy Europe, and most memorably vibrant Indonesia. Yes, my love for color was probably triggered by wild butterflies, swirling batik cloth, and aqua water. Maybe it is also why I don’t like studio shots. To me photography is taking photos of people in the world, in environments,  and cities.

The world is my studio. And I can’t wait to photograph more of it!

Where do you live? And where is your dream vacation location?

A history of me

For those of you new to my blog I’m doing a mini series going through all the about me pages on my website.  It’s been fun introducing myself in more detail!

Up next:

History

Most people I know can’t stand history. They say it’s boring. Well if you had been taught by my teacher you wouldn’t have said that! I was homeschooled so my teacher (mom) was always trying to make school and learning interesting, fun, exciting. We’d pick a topic and study all the angles. I remember in about 6th grade we studied ancient Egypt.  We built sugar cube pyramids while mom read to us about the pharaohs. We put on a play for my dad, including a mural painting, and my brothers in paper tube beards!

Later, in High School, we studied WWII and read books about personal stories not just dates and names. We listened to the Andrews Sisters and Glen Miller to get a feel for what was popular. We watched classic movie of the era like Casablanca, noticing the details of clothing and cars and style of hair. At the end of our unit study we had a grand meal, everyone dressed up. The guys wore old GI uniforms and the girls dolled up like Betty Grable or Judy Garland. Now doesn’t that sound like a fun way to learn history!

Real people. Real events. Real styles, music, books, stories, lives.

I love history so much I’m getting my bachelors in History! And no- I am not going to be a teacher. I just like studying about it. Photography is -and hopefully will always be- my career.

My favorite Eras: Ancient history and 1700-1950.

What was your favorite subject in school?

Tuesday | life of a Fargo wedding photographer

Tuesdays are interesting days in the life of a wedding photographer. Some take Sunday and Monday as their weekend (since most work Saturdays), so Tuesday is like other peoples’ Monday.

Me? I guess I love my job too much. I tend to only take Sunday’s off, and be back working on Monday like everyone else. I actually really look forward to Mondays. I love waking up with something to do. Something that I love to do. There’s a great quote that says it better:

“Thank God every morning when you get up that you have something to do which must be done, whether you like it or not. Being forced to work, and forced to do your best, will breed in you temperance, self control, diligence, strength, content, and a hundred other virtues which the idle never know.” ~Charles Kingsley

I’m so thankful to wake up and look forward to the day of work set at my feet. How lucky, how blessed am I!

So back to Tuesdays. They are usually quieter days for me. Monday is the crazy- catch up with emails and send out brochure requests that came in over the weekend-day. Tuesdays are project days. Editing, designing albums, and, as of now, studying – (see 2 posts down). The week builds up momentum as the days go by. Most shoots are on Friday, and of course Saturday is Wedding Photography Day! Then the cycle starts all over again. What a great variety. And as they say, “Variety is the spice of life.” (On a side note- who are “They” anyway?)

What do you do and how does your week pan out? I’d love to hear!

Elssa | English Springer Spaniel

The third “about me” slide on my website that I want to talk about is:

Actually the photos pretty much say it all.

I got Elssa 7 years ago, a small bundle of soft, silky energy.  I think she must have read the manual on being man’s best friend, because she is always near me.

One of her favorite things to do is to jump up on my office chair as I work, and slide behind my back. It looks awkward, but she’s a great heating pad on these -20 below days!

I’m afraid that I have way too many photos of Elssa. She’s such a model, and such fun to practice with!

Although, sometimes I think she gets tired of posing for the camera:

Do you have a pet? What is your favorite thing about them?

Math

Some of you may know that I have been working on my bachelor’s degree for 10 years. Yes, 10. Because I’ve been starting a business I didn’t have as much time to spend studying, so I’ve only taken about 8 credits a semester. When  you need 120 to graduate it takes a LONG time. I only have one class left: a 6 credit Math course. Actually it isn’t even a course, I’m trying to test out of as many classes as possible (taking a CLEP test is about $80, vs thousands for a class!). Anyway it’s been a struggle for several reasons. I haven’t touched ‘real’ math since high school so everything I once knew has to be relearned. And it’s all over the board, sets, functions, algebra, geometry, logic, and lots of stuff I never heard of! Math has never been easy for me either.

So today as I studied and was frustrated I had to remind myself that I’m not stupid. I can do this. It’s HARD work. But I can do it.

Just to keep myself motivated I made this for my screen saver:

And I will.

Candy Colored World

Day two of the ‘about me’  page explanations. Today’s peak into my personality is probably fairly obvious to anyone cruising around my website.

COLOR – or COLOUR if you are from across the pond.

What can I say about color. It’s something that is in my blood. My great grandfather painted houses for a living. At that time there were no computers to mix paint colors, only eyes. My great grandfather was know all over Bismark as the man who could match color perfectly. No need to paint a whole room over again. He could mix the exact shade and paint over the spot or mark on the wall.

Living in Fargo ND means that 6 months of the year are WHITE. White on the ground. White sky. White roads. White world. Which probably explains why last week when we actually had a clear day I sat and stared at the sky. It was BLUE. I had almost forgotten. How magical. I mean seriously, when was the last time that you appreciated living in a colorful world?

One of my passions in photography is using color. A plain orange wall becomes a canvas. I used to do more B&W (which I still like), but the more I shoot the more I gravitate towards the color copy of an image. It sings. B&W is drama. Color is life. Both are fun!

The color of the month: |  Green.  Fresh, tree-bud green |  In anticipation of spring!

What is your favorite color?

About Me | Books

I spent the last few days thinking about the “About me” page on my website. It’s actually the hardest page to make! I decided to do a slide show of my favorite things, things that inspire me, that I love. So I thought I’d start out a mini blog series on what each page represents.

First up: Books

I actually had a hard time deciding what books to feature in the photo. I wanted colorful books because one of my loves is color. I also wanted books that represent me. What I love. History. Science. Art. Literature. Children’s literature too (Yes I am an adult, and yes I still love reading kids books). Many of my all time favorite books are not in the pile because they didn’t fit the mix, looked out of place, were too dog-eared, or simply (sadly) ugly!  Even though I love the stories, they didn’t make the visual cut.

Books hold a dear place in my life, and my family’s heart. We have books everywhere! I love the joy of learning new things, not only for myself but how it allows me to reach out and understand people around me. Being an avid reader makes me a better photographer, I can converse with people on just about any topic and make them feel comfortable (a vital gift in photographing weddings in Fargo or anywhere!).

My favorite reads (NOT complete, and constantly changing):

Non fiction:  | Garlic and Sapphires | History of the World in 6 Glasses | The Spy Wore Red | Salt | All Creatures Great and Small |

Fiction: |  Lord of the Rings | The Beekeepers Apprentice | Sherlock Holmes | Pride and Prejudice | Midsummer’s Night Dream |

Children’s Literature:  | Chronicles of Narnia | Holes | The Ordinary Princess | Ella Enchanted | A Series of Unfortunate Events |

What are your favorite books and why? I always need another recommendation to check out at the library!
